BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Planning on how and where to celebrate St. Patrick's Day? Goodman's Deli just might be the perfect place. Beginning Thursday, March 16, through Sunday, March 19, corned beef will be the star at the deli.
Whether you want to start your day with corned beef hash and eggs for breakfast, or have a hearty corned beef on rye sandwich for lunch, or wrap up the day with a traditional corned beef platter with cabbage, carrots, boiled red potatoes and rye bread, Goodman's is the place for you. If you are in doubt about how good their corned beef is, remember, it made the "Best of the Deli" review list kept by foodies from Philadelphia. They make sure to stop in whenever they they go on one of their annual food tours.
Owner Don Parkin checked his paperwork and said he's ordered ""1,100 pounds of corned beef, 200 pounds of cabbage and 150 pounds of carrots and red potatoes," for that four-day period. That's more than half a ton of meat , and it's likely that by the time Goodman's closes on Sunday, most of it will be gone.
Goodman's, which was founded in 1943, in Elizabeth, moved to Berkeley Heights in 2000. Parkin purchased it In 2010. "This will be the first St. Patrick's Day falling on a Friday, so I am curious to see what that brings," he said.
What experience has taught Parkin in that pretty much everyone who comes in on St. Patrick's Day wants corned beef in one form or another,"pastrami seems a bit left out on that weekend," even though diners may order anything from his menu.
Goodman's is located at 400 Springfield Ave., in the shopping center. The corned beef platter, at $15.95, will be available to eat in or take out from about 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 16 through Sunday, March 19. The deli is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. To place a take out order, call 908-898-0900 or fax in the order at 898-0905. If you're coming to dine in, "don't forget to bring your own beer," Parkin said.
