BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ – The Governor Livingston field hockey team defeated Livingston 1-0 on Wednesday afternoon in Berkeley Heights.
The Highlanders (5-2) dominated on the offensive side of the ball the entire game, keeping the action down on the Livingston side of the field. They had early opportunities to get on the board but saw four shots hit the outside of the net to keep the score tied at zero.
GL finally broke through in the second half when Christina Hanson found the back of the goal to give the Highlanders a 1-0 lead. Both Audrey Cardone and Tiffany Luo were credited with the assist on the goal. With 24 shots on goal on the day, the Highlanders struggled to capitalize on chances to increase their lead. Livingston goalie Beth Goldberg was credited with 12 saves for the Lancers.
Livingston was close to tying the game up with less than five minutes to go in the second half thanks to some breakaways, but the Highlander defense was able to come up with the saves. The game marks the third shutout of the season for GL.
As of September 25, GL comes in at No. 9 in the first Essex/Union Conference rankings of the season.
The Highlanders have the weekend off before facing Cranford at home on Monday, October 2. Game time is set for 4 p.m. on the GL turf field.
