BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ -  Tuesday, June 23, Mayor Robert Woodruff opened the council meeting by saying "Tonight is about excellence."

He then proceeded to honor both the Governor Livingston High School Highlander Varsity Baseball Team, the 2015 Group 2 State Champions, and the GLHS Highlander Varsity Softball Team, with its 22-5 record.

The softball team, which is coached by Mike Roof, lost to Matawan in the Group 2 semifinals, after finishing first in Union County Conference, sixth in Group 2 and winning the Union County Conference - Watchung Division title. The mayor then called up Varsity Baseball Team Coach Chris Roof and told a story about his first meeting with Roof. When they met, Roof told him he had a plan to build a baseball program at GL.  By the time they finished that conversation the mayor said, "I knew he would do it." When the team won the Group 2 State Championship Roof, won his 300th game and had definitely created a successful baseball program.

The mayor called up team members individually and the coaches, who listened as he read the proclamation. They received a round of applause before leaving the front of the council chamber. After a five-minute break, the council began its regular meeting.
