JERSEY CITY, NJ - The indoor track and field season is in full swing. The GL girls and boys teams participated in the Union County Relay Championships on Saturday, January 5th, which was held at the Jersey City Armory.  Eight varsity relay events were scored per gender. Out of all the Union County high schools, the Gov. Livingston girls team placed ninth and the Gov. Livingston boys team placed tenth.

The highlight of the meet for the GL girls team was the victory clenched in the sprint medley event.  That event is comprised of a 200 meter dash, followed by another 200 meter dash, then a 400 meter dash, and ending with an 800 meter run. The GL line-up included senior Victoria Pantina on the first leg, junior Alexandra Cassu on the second leg, sophomore Samantha Erickson on the third leg and junior Victoria Vanriele anchoring.

The sprint medley was the penultimate varsity track event. Up to that point, the Union Catholic girls team had won all the track events.  GL’s first three runners for the shorter legs had already raced in previous events. Strategically, Vanriele had fresh legs to anchor the longer 800 meter distance. She paced herself expertly, and grabbed the lead on the last curve to win the event in a time of 4:13.63, which is currently the New Jersey #2 and the US #7 fastest time for the season.  This time lowers the school record that was set last year and meets the qualifying standard for high school nationals to be held in March. Vanriele has already met the national standards for the open 400 and 800 at earlier meets, and currently holds the US # 1 time in the 600 at 1:31.63 and the US #3 time in the 800 at 2:12.43.

The highlight of the meet for the GL boys team was the third place finish for the high jump relay event. The event is scored by combining the heights achieved by two jumpers. The two jumpers for GL included sophomore Kyle Arnold, who cleared 5’8” and senior Darren DelDuca, who cleared 5’6”.

Up next, the girls and boys teams compete on Friday, January 18 in the Group 2 Relay Championships at the Bennett Indoor Track Center in Toms River.
