BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Junior Katie Debbie belts a grand slam home run followed by a two run homer at her next at bat in 17-0 victory over Lincoln Monday afternoon in the first round of the NJSIAA Sectional Tournament, Central Jersey, Group 2.
Madison Phillips pitched a four inning shut out, striking out five, allowing two hits.
GL's bats came out hot from the start, as the Lady Highlanders raced out to a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the first. Nicole Trezza got things started with a triple and came around to score on a sacrifice hit by Alanna Namit. Debbie, Alyssa Hammer and Phillips followed by driving in two more runs giving GL a comfortable lead after the opening frame.
The Lady Highlanders continued their offensive show in the contest, using a 7-run second inning to notch their 8th double-digit scoring output of the season.
GL broke it open scoring seven runs on five base-hits including Debbie's grand slam home run bringing home Jaime Belfer, Lombardi, and Trezza. Lombardi doubled at her next at bat sending two more runs home.
Phillips retired the next three Lincoln batters sending GL to the plate with the hopes of ending the game before the forecasted storm could possibly delay the game.
GL succeeded and continued a hitting streak in the third with home runs by Trezza and Debbie. Lombardi capped off the onslaught with a triple brining in two additional runners.
The game's abrupt mercy rule ending came just in time before the skies opened up to the forecasted downpour.
