WATCHUNG, NJ -- Shoppers have until September 17 to make their final purchases from the landmark Sears store on Route 22 East at Terrill Road, according to employees at the store this morning. Signs both inside and outside the store promote Sears' going-out-of-business sales.

In January, Sears announced a number of story closings, and it appeared for a time that the local store might be spared. However, more recently, the struggling retailer revealed that it was set to close the Watchung store.

According to a report by the Courier News, Seritage Growth Properties, which owns the Sears property, has received approval to demolish the 118,000 sq. ft. building and replace it with a shopping center that has four "pads" for retail or restaurant use and two larger buildings with stores.

The real estate company said it will donate the famed "The Legend of Watchung" mural to either Watchung or Somerset County before the building is demolished, according to the Courier News report.
