A new spring session for The LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program, a 12-week cancer recovery program, will begin at the Berkeley Heights YMCA on March 20, 2018. The program is a research-based physical and wellness program in which certified Summit Area YMCA trainers work with participants to achieve their goals. LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA helps cancer survivors who find themselves in the transitional period between completing their cancer treatment and the shift to feeling physically and emotionally strong enough to return to normality. The Summit Area YMCA staff is trained in supportive cancer care, and work with participants in building muscle mass, strength, increasing flexibility, endurance, improving confidence, self-esteem and more.
For Karen Tucker, a LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA participant from the Summit YMCA, cancer had made its way into her life for the second time and she wanted nothing but to get back to her old self. “I had been diagnosed with breast cancer once before, and the second time I went through with a double mastectomy. I couldn’t walk from chemo, I had blisters in my throat, I had neuropathy in my hands, feet, and legs among many other tough side effects. When I was cleared by my doctor, I couldn’t wait to start getting back to my old self with the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. There’s such a variety of types of exercise the program introduces us to in order to get stronger—swimming, weights and circuit, nutrition classes. I used to be quite a swimmer, so being able to get back in the water and slowly get better at it again was really exciting.”
Within the program, Y staff not only help survivors to improve their physical strength, flexibility and endurance, but also connect survivors with each other to create a supportive network of friends and neighbors. “Cancer is a bad club that we all belong to, but it’s always nice to be able to talk to someone who knows how you feel without being judged. There’s great peer pressure too—we motivate each other to push ourselves to try harder and do better. Everyone here at the Y is here to support you and help you be your best self.” said Karen.
The LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program helps survivors to become healthier and happier individuals. Each session lasts for 12 weeks, where participants and their families receive a free Y membership for full access to YMCA facilities, including KidZone childcare services. There are two 75 minute classes each week within a small group setting of 8-10 participants.
