On August 4, 2013, the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad recognized two students, Chris “CJ” Scalera and Ashvin Singh for their extraordinary community service work. Berkeley Heights Mayor Joseph Bruno was in attendance to personally thank and congratulate both of them.

CJ Scalera is an Eagle Scout Candidate from Boy Scout Troop 68 in Berkeley Heights. He is currently a high school student at Seton Hall Preparatory School in West Orange. CJ elected to complete his Eagle Scout Project to improve the grounds of the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad. Under his leadership, a picnic grove area was developed and created by the boy scouts adjacent to the squad parking lot.

Ashvin Singh is an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and associate member of the rescue squad.  He is currently a college student at Boston University in Massachusetts. Ashvin was volunteering as a medical scribe in the first aid tent at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013.  His service took on a new role after the two pressure cooker bombs exploded which killed 3 people and injured 264 others. Ashvin credits his EMT certification and training he received at the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad for his ability to help the victims of that tragedy.

The rescue squad offers their thanks to both Ashvin and CJ and welcomes anyone that would like to provide service to the squad and our community. Anyone interested in becoming a member can contact us at 908-464-0013 or email Membership@BHVRS.org today. Flexible time shifts are available and free uniforms and training are provided.  We also have an affiliate membership if you would like to donate your time, but can't commit to riding an ambulance shift. We are looking for anything from grant writing and clerical work to help maintaining the squad building and grounds. Please let us know if you have a particular skill to donate that you believe could be of service to the squad.
