FANWOOD, NJ — A Plainfield woman was electrocuted by wires that fell on top of her car as she drove east along Midway Avenue in Fanwood during severe thunderstorms that swept through the area shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Monday.

The driver was killed when she tried to exit the car on the passenger side during the rainstorm and was electricuted by the live wires, witnesses said.

"I was inside my house and heard a big pop," said Bob Pacio, who lives on Midway Avenue across from the where the car stopped. "I saw wires across the car and flames. When she got out, the lady's pants were smoking. What a terrible way to die."

The 26-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Fanwood Police Chief Richard Trigo. Her name has not been released.
