New Jersey Easter Parades are Still in Fashion

NEW JERSEY - "Easter Parade" debuted in 1948, starring Judy Garland, Fred Astaire and Ann Miller. It's an endearing classic, as is an annual Easter Parade. Unlike many things, they just never seem to go out of style. When Easter Sunday comes, whether it's early in March or later in April, so do the traditional parades.

When the baskets have been dug into and the eggs have been located, it's time to put on the Sunday best and head out for a stroll. The time-honored custom has been going on for 80 plus years in Asbury Park and tomorrow isn't any exception.

Asbury Park's 81 Annual Easter Parade will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, March 27 at the Paramount Theater on Ocean Avenue, right on the Asbury Park Boardwalk. Prizes are awarded for Best Dressed Man, Woman, Boy, Girl, Family and for the Most Unusual Bonnet. Awards include trophies, Easter Baskets and gift certificates.

Jenkinson's on the Point Pleasant Boardwalk will be holding their Annual Easter Parade on Easter Sunday as well. Registration is from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in front of Joey Tomatoes. The actual parade begins at 1 p.m. Categories include:

  • Float
  • Multiples
  • Family
  • Bonnet
  • Cutest Girl ages zero through three, ages four through six and ages seven through 10
  • Cutest Boy ages zero through three, ages four through six and ages seven through 10

Jenkinson's is also holding their annual 2 for 1 Easter Sale. Visitors can plan ahead for summertime and purchase ride cards from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. The sale is only valid in-person at one of the Jenkison Ticket Booths along the boardwalk or online. Easter Sunday, March 27, is the last day of this year's 2 for 1 Easter Sale.

Everyone looks awesome in their Easter Sunday wear. However, in Cape May, the annual Easter Parade takes on a slightly different tone. The traditional event is called the Cape May Easter Fashion Stroll. Registration begins at noon at the Washington Street Mall with the stroll kicking off at 1 p.m.

Prizes are awarded in the following categories:

  • Ages three and younger
  • Ages four through six
  • Ages seven through nine
  • Ages 10 through 12
  • Ages 13 and up
  • Best Dressed Man
  • Best Dressed Lady
  • Best Dressed Couple
  • Best Dressed Family
  • Best Bonnet

Winners will receive Easter goodies, gift certificates and ribbons.

These parades aren't just for residents. All are welcome to participate or just watch the wonderful outfits walk on by.
