New Providence American Legion Post 433 announced that it will award six scholarships to rising seniors from New Providence High School in New Providence and Governor Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights, so they can attend New Jersey Boys State this summer at Rider University.
The program is a week-long exercise in civics where the students, acting as statesman, form and run mock municipal, county and state governments. The program also includes government and civic seminars; business and career seminars and a college fair.
Musicians are eligible to play in the Governor’s Band. Last year’s speakers and guests included Senators Cory Booker and Robert Menendez, Representative Leonard Lance and Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno.
“We are very excited to award these scholarships to highly motivated and civic minded students from our local community. This is a great opportunity for these statesman to further their knowledge and understanding of how governments function at multiple levels.” commented Post Program Coordinator Terrence Grossman.
Past alumni of the program include Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, Governor Chris Christie, Bruce Springsteen, Senator Cory Booker, Senator Robert Menendez, Representative Leonard Lance and Jon Bon Jovi.
“Our state program is recognized for its excellence by many college and universities throughout the country," said Grossman. Certain New Jersey state colleges and universities will award college credits for students who complete the week long program.
Those interested in applying should check with their school's high school guidance counselor.
