NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - The New Providence women’s USTA team has won two local championships, both the 40+ league (10-0), which took them to their first regionals, and then the 18+ league (6-0), which allowed them to compete in their second regionals.
The 18+ Regionals took place over the course of three days, and by winning that they have earned the right to represent the state of New Jersey in the Eastern USTA Sectional competition in Schenectady, N.Y. the weekend of Aug. 22-24.
The New Providence USTA team first won the local league, which is comprised of teams from Middlesex, Sussex and Union counties. They defeated two teams from Monmouth County and Bergen County and the winning team from the multi-county spring and fall day leagues.
The New Providence women play on Tuesday nights on the New Providence Recreation’s outdoor courts and have 14 members from New Providence, Summit, Berkeley Heights, Maplewood, Watchung, Gillette and Florham Park. They travel to play matches against neighboring towns, such as Scotch Plains, Plainfield, Netherwood and three teams that play out of the Green Knoll Tennis Center in Bridgewater.
For four years, the team used to play at Berkeley Heights’ outdoor courts, but they moved to New Providence when the town upgraded their courts and added lights for night play in 2013.
The upcoming USTA Eastern Sectionals includes six regions, mostly from New York state: Long Island, Metro New York City, Northern New Jersey, Northern New York, Southern New York and western region of New York state. The winner of the sectionals will advance to the national USTA tournament in Arizona against the 13 other sectional champions. Last year, they were defeated by the Monmouth County team, which advanced to nationals.
