SUMMIT, NJ - A pedestrian was struck by a New Jersey Transit bus as he crossed Summit Avenue, at Union Place, in Summit this morning, and was transported by Summit EMS to the Trauma Center at Morristown Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.

The 48 year-old Springfield man, whose identify has not been released, was hit at 7:04 a.m. by the Number 70 New Jersey Transit Bus -- operating a Newark- Livingston Mall route -- which had been traveling south on Summit Avenue. The driver of the bus was identified as New Jersey Transit employee Ronald T. Lewis, age 51, of Union.

The bridge on Summit Avenue, spanning the railroad tracks adjacent to the Summit Train Station, was closed for several hours after the incident, but reopened by 10 a.m.

The accident is being investigated by the Summit Police Department Accident Investigation Team. Any witnesses are encouraged to contact the Summit Police at 908-273-0051.
