BERKELEY HEIGHTS—Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts’ Performing Arts School (PAS) faculty member Joyce Alexander is the recipient of the 2016-2017 Musikgarten Exemplary Program Award. Musikgarten, the award-winning leader in early childhood music education, has recognized a number of teachers for their outstanding Musikgarten studios and contributions to music education in their communities. As one of 75 programs in North America to receive this prestigious award, this recognition signifies that Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts offers a full complement of Musikgarten classes for children from birth to 9 years of age.

Joyce Alexander is a Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC). She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music Therapy from Montclair State University and has also studied voice, theory, and performance at The New School in New York City. Alexander received the Department of Music David Ott Scholarship and Outstanding Student Music Therapist Award while at Montclair State University. She has advanced teacher training in Kindermusik and Musikgarten. Alexander has served as music therapist in several settings including Bayonne Public Schools, Regional Day School (Morristown), American Day Treatment Center (Verona), Essex County Hospital (Cedar Grove), and S.A.G.E. (Berkeley Heights). She is currently the Early Childhood Music Coordinator at Wharton Institute for the Performing Arts.
Based in Greensboro, North Carolina, Musikgarten specializes in early childhood music and movement programs for children from birth to age 9 and group piano for both children and adults. Wharton is New Jersey’s largest independent non-profit community performing arts education center serving over 1,400 students through a range of classes and ensembles including the 14 ensembles of the New Jersey Youth Symphony which serve 500 students in grades 3 - 12. Beginning with Early Childhood music classes for infants and toddlers, WIPA offers private lessons, group classes and ensembles for all ages and all abilities. The Paterson Music Project is Wharton’s El Sistema-inspired program held at the Community Charter School of Paterson and Paterson Public School 1/26. Students receive 6 hours of intensive music instruction each week with the goal of creating social change through the ambitious pursuit of musical excellence.
