WESTFIELD, NJ — In a 2013 commencement speech at Westfield High School the president of Marvel Studios — who had graduated from the school 22 years prior — encouraged new grads to use technology in surprising and revelatory ways.

Kevin Feige has now helped to give future generations of Westfield students the opportunity to do just that with his donation of $500,000 to fund new audio and visual equipment for a refurbished television studio.

“You need to connect the dots, connect them in new and surprising and revelatory ways,” Feige told students in 2013. “The age of information overload is here. Many people are going to drown in it and simply give into the noise, but you’re the first generation that are going to need to make sense of it and use its powers for good.”

Schools Superintendent Margaret Dolan this week announced Feige’s donation, recalling that when the executive visited his high school in 2013 and toured the studio, he had noted it looked largely the same as it did when he was a student.

This summer, the school district started an extensive renovation of the studio that will convert it into a soundproof production space with studio cameras on pedestals equipped with teleprompters and tally lights, an updated lighting grid, new editing workstations and a professional control room, school officials said in a news release Wednesday.

Since the studio is a teaching space, the officials said, it would also include movable furniture and multiple curtain tracks to create a variety of quick set changes. Feige’s donation will enable the district to populate the new space with its new equipment.

“I am proud and grateful to accept a donation of $500,000 from the Feige Family Trust to be used specifically for audio/video equipment in the TV studio,” Dolan said. “This generous donation will greatly enhance the new studio’s technical and instructional capabilities. We thank Kevin for his interest and support, and we congratulate him on his tremendous success.”
