NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - When it comes to helping children, elderly and animals -- Susan Barbaglia, owner of Skin Deep Salon & Spa, will knock on your door, search the internet for answers, and respond to written requests -- because she's that passionate about giving back to those in need.

"If I have the opportunity to do something, I will," said Barbaglia. "We have that need to give back -- we should," she said. "We want to thank the community for making us successful. -- The way I like to thank them is by helping the community."

As soon as she heard of a local child battling cancer, she sought out the family and knocked on their door offering her help for their cause. When Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, she started a collection for pet supplies --  and a client contributed an additional supply of 500 survival kits for pets. "I have a soft spot in my heart for children in need and animals," said Barbaglia. "They can't speak for themselves."

If she's not collecting donations at her salon, she is giving to various charitable causes by donating Girls Night Out Spa Packages or fundraising to help individuals in need. Barbaglia also provides salon service once a month for the Diva for a Day program. This program treats a cancer patient to a day of beauty, lunch and a beautiful bouquet of flowers. She also cuts hair for Locks of Love.

Barbaglia is currently working with the Basking Ridge hub of "Christmas is for Children" to provide gifts to 50 children in need. Each child has a wish list that includes "a want, a need and an educational item," said Barbaglia. Her clients and staff enjoy participating by picking a "Gingerbread man" from her window. The Gingerbread man has a child's name, age and their wish list. They will shop, wrap and tag the gifts and place in a hefty bag and return to Skin Deep for an early December delivery. It fills Barbaglia's heart with joy to deliver these gifts for the children who otherwise would not receive a gift of any sort.

In the near future, Barbaglia would like to create her own non-profit that would provide food for the elderly and their pets on an ongoing basis. "It's very generous to donate around the holidays, but it's other times they really need it," she said.

How does Barbaglia finds the time to run a busy successful full service salon and dedicate so much time to giving back? She admits, "You just make time in between. The most productive people are the busiest people," she said.

"We have strength in numbers," said Barbaglia. "When you have so many people walking through the door, you have the opportunity to make them aware and make it easy for people to give."
