BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ- The Highlanders defeated Somerville 13-6 to advance in the state tournament.

GL started strong. They scored four runs in the first inning and kept Somerville without a run, but Somerville tied the game up at 4-4 in the third off of two doubles. In the fourth inning, Jamie Belfer blasted a triple to bring Jessica Schmidt and Julian Lopes home, and on the next at bat, Julia McConekey batted Belfer in for a 7-4 GL lead. Both teams scored once in the fifth inning. The Highlanders sealed the win in the sixth inning. They scored five runs including a double from Belfer that brought Schmidt and Lopes home again. The game ended 16-3 after Somerville scored the final run in the seventh.

"I was worried about them coming in because I know they could hit somewhat," said GL head coach Mike Roof, "And I knew that they were a 15 seed but there's no way they should've been a 15 seed. I was obviously concerned about their ability to hit the ball. Outside of that, Jamie had some longer counts, but she was, in the end, effective in those at bats pitching-wise. We did enough hitting-wise. I thought we were very aggressive on the bases. Balls hit the outfield, and we were getting two bases whether it was first to third or second to home. The base running worked out. The fielding wasn't too much of an issue for us, and Jamie did enough pitching-wise for us. We supported her with more than enough runs."
