BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ- The Highlanders won a landslide 10-1 victory over Union on Wednesday afternoon.
GL took the lead early when Evan Pallitta clobbered a two run homerun deep into right field in the first inning. They built on the lead in the second with Jamie Belfer and Juliann Lopes each batting a run home in the second.
Union's lone run came in the third inning, but GL responded with a double play to shift into their highest scoring inning. Jane Morabito and Jess Schmidt blasted back-to-back homeruns to start the bottom of the third, and Belfer batted two runners in off a triple to left-center field. The Highlanders led 6-1 at the end of the third.
The game progressed with solid fielding and pitching from the home team. GL pitcher Julia McConekey finished the game with three strikeouts, seven hits and, one walk in the game.
"The defense was what it normally is for us. We didn't make too many mistakes obviously," GL head coach Mike Roof said after the game, "We fielded pretty well behind Julia, and Julia pitched an efficient game. You didn't really see much fatigue at all from her. It was nice to see her go the distance and finish the game for us."
GL would score twice more in the fifth inning to seal the victory. Belfer's three RBIs led the team. Pallitta, Schmidt, and, Lopes followed with two RBIs each, and Morabito finished the game with one RBI off of her homerun. "Hitting-wise we're a lot better when we're aggressive- when the counts in our favor," Roof said after the game, "Sometimes when we get behind in count, we get a little tentative. We start guessing."
Next, GL will travel to Scotch Plains Fanwood on Friday, April 20 and they host the Varsity Softball Showdown tournament on Saturday between GL, Madison, Summit, and Columbia.
