State Director of the Academic Decathlon Will Speak to Summit Old Guard

Glenn Koegel, New Jersey State Director of the Academic Decathlon, will speak to the Old Guard of Summit at its Meeting, 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 12th, 2013.  His subject will be “A Team Approach toward Advancing High School Education.”

Mr. Koegel will describe how the Academic Decathlon fosters the team approach.  The Decathlon sponsors interscholastic team competitions for high school teams nationwide. Over 70 high schools in New Jersey participate.  A “team” includes three students with A averages, three with B averages, and three with C averages.  All nine team members take the same tests.  The team's score depends on the performances of all its members.

The competition includes multiple tests (art, language, science), prepared and impromptu public speaking and interviews with a panel of business persons.  Regional decathlons are held throughout New Jersey.  Regional winners take part in the State Decathlon.  The highest scoring team represents New Jersey at the United States Academic Decathlon.
