BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Summit took down Governor Livingston in a lopsided 18-2 victory in Berkeley Heights on Saturday in girls varsity lacrosse, the Hilltoppers' second victory in a row.  The Summit Hilltoppers defeated Cranford High School in their season opener 18-2 on Friday. Governor Livingston also had an opening day victory against Scotch Plains/Fanwood High School, 9-2.

Summit lit up the score board with eight unanswered goals in the first half of the game. When Summit's Meghan Celmer scored their eighth point of the game Governor Livingston's coach Kristy Annussek called a timeout with 10:26 left in the half. At 7:37 Jackie Wells scored Governor Livingston's first goal. With the score now 1-8, Summit responded by piling on five more points late in the first half and early 2nd half.

Governor Livingston did manage to score again late in the 2nd half to make it a 2-13 contest but Summit had the momentum in their favor. The Hilltoppers had more speed than the Highlanders and controlled the passing lanes the entire game. Governor Livingston lost this one early when they fell behind by 10 points at 3:01 left in the first half. At 3:01 Summit's Kate Martino scored to increase Summit's lead  to 11-1.

Kate Martino and Caroline Cordrey each scored four goals to power Summit. Jackie Wells and Nicole Bendush scored Governor Livingston's two goals. Summit's head coach Rob Grella said, "I felt that we could have done a better job picking up ground balls but I was pretty happy overall what the girls did today...We came out and played hard and we (the coaches) always tell them no matter the level of competition always make the right decisions and make the right plays because on any given day anybody can beat anybody."

Summit has made it to the sectional finals two years in a row. Grella feels confident they will be a contender again this season. Summit will try to make it three in a row when the Hilltoppers take on Kent Place at home on Monday at 4 p.m.  Governor Livingston will attempt to regroup in an away game against Livingston High School on Wednesday April 6th at 4:PM.
