NEW PROVIDENCE, NJ - In its third year, New Providence High School students from the Character Education program have coordinated an effort to bring awareness to the national campaign 'Spread the Word to End the Word' across all New Providence schools with the hope to reach entire community.

Student leaders Katie Kinum, Brielle Carleen and Hannah Caminiti, along with committee members Marissa Policarpio, William Nave, David Caminiti, Anthony Iannacone, and Patrick Trezza have asked students at all grade levels to join their efforts and sign the pledge to "Stop the Word."  Banners have been placed at the elementary schools and middle school to have all the students sign it to commit to "Spread the Word" to not say the word "retard."

"We are trying to get the entire community involved as it is our 3rd year doing this," said Caminiti. "We want to spread more awareness." The Character Education Committee wants to use this campaign to spread the message that the language you use is important and that no form of the R-word is appropriate in our culture any longer.

The student led committee will have a table at Tuesday's boys basketball game to bring awareness to the campaign and will sell bracelets as the admission to the game. Tee shirts will also be available for sale. All proceeds will be donated to 'Spread the Word.'

In addition, there will be a special 10 minute half-time basketball game played between guest students with participation from the New Providence Girls Basketball team.
