LOS ANGELES - Tom McCarthy, actor, director and now Academy Award-winning screenwriter for his movie, “Spotlight,” stepped onstage last night holding his gold statue for Best Original Screenplay.

The New Providence High School alumnus stepped to the microphone and said, “We made this film for all the journalists who have and continue to hold the powerful accountable, and for the survivors whose courage and will to overcome is an inspiration to all. We have to make sure this never happens again.” The movie he co-wrote and directed also won Best Picture.

Tom McCarthy stands as a new inspiration to the students at NPHS. A former student, who shares all the same experiences in the classrooms, the lunchroom and the hallways at New Providence High School, just attained the ultimate honor that the American film industry has to offer.
