PLAINFIELD, NJ - The Union County Track and Field Championships were held at Stub Hine Field in Plainfield on Thursday. Governor Livingston came away from the meet with two County Champions – Lauren Saifi in the pole vault and Victoria Vanriele in the 800m. Saifi cleared 11-00, a foot and a half higher than her nearest competitor. Vanriele ran a 2:09.48, lowering her own meet record, which she set last year. She was nearly four seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
The girls 800m race was a highlight for Governor Livingston, with three runners placing in the top six. In addition to Vanriele, Katie Quinn placed 4th in 2:20. 36, a new personal best by almost 3 seconds, and freshman Sophie Crestitello placed 6th in 2:21.97.
Governor Livingston also scored with two athletes in the boys pole vault. Darren DelDuca placed 3rd and Kyle McCarthy placed 4th, both vaulting 11-06. (DelDuca reached the height in fewer attempts.)
Alexa Saldida placed in two events. She had a 4th place finish in the javelin with a throw of 100-11 and placed 5th in the discus with a throw of 99-07.
Caroline Mondelli placed second in the girls 3200m, running 11:47.46.
In the team competition, the GL girls team placed 4th and the GL boys team was 11th. Both teams will be back in action at the New Jersey Central Group 2 Track and Field Championships, May 25-26, at Jackson Liberty High School in Jackson Township, New Jersey.
