CRANFORD, NJ - Vibhav Chaturvedi of Berkeley Heights won first place, in a field of 36 competitors, at the Munsee District Fifth Annual Chess Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018 in Cranford.
The tournament was open to Scout and non-Scout boys and girls between the ages of 11-17. Four Scouts from Troop 368 entered the tournament including Joey Antonucci, Alex Beke, Vibhav Chaturvedi and Sean Gleeson.
Contestants were paired off to play four games total, with winners matched up against each other in successive rounds. Vibhav had the highest score, with a 4-0 record, to earn the First Place finish. Instead of trophies, the top three finishers were presented with a travel chess set, that included an engraved plaque identifying their achievement.
Chess boards, pieces, and chess clocks used in the tournament were are all donated by White Castle who originally sponsored the event. This year, White Castle did not participate and lunch was donated by a local Cranford pizza restaurant. All participants earned credit for Chess Merit Badge Requirement 6a, for competing in a chess tournament.
