BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - On August 26, New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association officially postponed the Girls’ Volleyball season due to regulations as a result of the pandemic. The sport, which traditionally begins in the fall, will hit the court in February.

As the only indoor fall sport, concerns around health and safety regulations forced the season to be delayed. But despite the setbacks to their season, including the cancellation of volleyball camp, the Highlander volleyball teams have still been busy preparing for the season when it gets here.

Ashley Parker, senior outside hitter said, “In a way, I’m glad about the postponement. I feel that by pushing it back, we have a better chance of having a full season.”

In 2019, Parker brought in 104 kills for the Highlanders and looks to continue that success with her teammates in the new season. “[I miss] playing volleyball of course, but I also miss the team and seeing the girls everyday,” Parker said.

The players aren’t the only ones affected by the postponement. Steven Hess, Junior Varsity coach and Governor Livingston math teacher, said, “I’m disappointed because we were getting close enough to our season that planning was in full gear. However, I think it’s smart.”

Even with their season delayed, the team members keep high hopes looking ahead to February.

Leah Dooley, senior outside hitter, is excited to spend time with her teammates. “I am looking forward to hanging out with the girls before games, dancing, and listening to music while practicing.”

Although Dooley and her teammates were worried about not being able to play in the fall, the players are optimistic for the chance to play in the winter and repeat their state tournament run.
