SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — A massive cloud of smoke filled the north side of Scotch Plains on Tuesday evening as firefighters responded to reports of a brush fire within the Watchung Reservation just north of Route 22.
According to the Berkeley Heights Fire Department, the fire has been extinguished and the New Jersey Forest Fire Service is cleaning up the area.
The fire was reported to have taken place in the area of a hair pin turn on Sky Top Drive between Glenside Avenue and Valley Road.
Called in as a two-alarm fire on local scanners, New Jersey Forest Fire Service trucks specifically designated for such occurrences were on the scene, as well as Scotch Plains, Watchung, New Providence, Fanwood, Mountainside and Berkeley Heights Fire Departments and Berkeley Heights EMS.
In a Facebook post, the Scotch Plains Office of Emergency Management wrote that affected residents are encouraged to close their windows to limit their exposure to the smoke.
