Hi, my name is Stephen Yellin, and I’m running for Township Council in Berkeley Heights this November. You’ll be able to find me on the ballot in the lower left-hand corner of Column A.
I’m running for Township Council because I love my town, and I want to help move Berkeley Heights forward again. As a lifelong resident, and having graduated from our public schools, I know that our community has the potential to lead Union County in all areas, including the effectiveness of our local government. The question, then is this: who can we as residents elect this year who will seek to make a positive difference for our town?
After watching our local government in action over the last few years, I decided that I would seek to be a part of that effort. Like most residents, I am concerned about the increasingly high cost of living in Berkeley Heights. I share the concerns of our taxpayers about how our money is being spent, and by whom. I agree with those who believe that our governing body needs new blood and new ideas. Most importantly, I want to listen to our residents’ concerns and do what I can to address those concerns.
The only campaign promise I will make is this: I will listen to the concerns of our residents before making up my mind. I will not be the kind of Councilman who makes bold statements when the cameras are on, and then does nothing when the crowds go home. I will not blindly follow anyone’s "agenda", but will perform my due diligence and come to a clear, defensible position on the issues.
Over the next six weeks, together with my running mate Linda Weber, I look forward to meeting as many of my fellow residents as I can. We will be offering new ideas, and taking positions on current issues, which can be found at www.bhdems.com. You can also "friend" us on Facebook ("Berkeley Heights Democrats").
I am determined to make a positive difference for Berkeley Heights, the town I live in and love. My hope is that you, the reader, will give me the chance to do just that.
Next week, I will discuss my background, both in Berkeley Heights and elsewhere, and my general areas of expertise.
