BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Matt Williams scored four goals on assists by three different teammates on Thursday, leading Westfield to a 6-2 boys soccer win over Gov. Livingston.
"Yesterday's game was on the team's mind all week after the sour taste left from the disappointing loss the previous game," said Williams.
At their last meeting, the game was scoreless until Gov. Livingston's Austin Irving scored off a corner kick in the 54th minute of play for 1-0 victory over Westfield.
"We were very motivated this game, especially as a team, because we knew we had to respond and show that the first game was a mistake and wouldn't happen again."
Williams beat the Highlanders defense and successfully finished past goalie Jake Topor, making it a 4-0 game in the first half.
The Highlanders got a goal through a penalty kick by senior Mike McKenna to spark GL going into break. Senior Chris Marzo began the second half breaking through connecting to McKenna who finished with his second goal cutting the deficit in half, 4-2.
The rally came up short as Mike Prosuk scored two second half goals for the Blue Devils to account for the 6-2 victory.
"It does feel amazing to end the game with a win," said Williams. "None of this would have been possible without my team and those who assisted Mike Prosuk and I."
Gov. Livingston will travel to Union on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Westfield will play Old Bridge on Monday, Oct. 6.
