My name is Dr Shengwu Du. I am running for Berkeley Heights Board of Ed this year.
I was approached to run for the Board of Ed to add diversity by representing the under-represented Asian community in Berkeley Heights. Personally I don't think we need to focus on race, but rather focus on qualifications and independent thought. The focus here really needs to be who can make our school better and who will do the best job in representing all of Berkeley Heights, not just those with people in the schools, not just the rich, not just the poor but everyone.
I have decided to run not to provide racial diversity to the board, but to provide a diversity of ideas and experiences. I am an independent thinker, not beholden to any group in Berkeley Heights. I have experience to set up and run a non-profit school here at Berkeley Heights. My economics PhD education and financial market work experience make my skills a great fit to run an over 50 million dollar a year budget in a way that will not only benefit those with children in the system but for those concerned about rising property taxes as well.
The base of my platform is the following:
-Teachers contract should be resolved sooner than later. For the benefit of our children, our school, and our community, we need to resolve this contract issue and come up with a long term plan.
-Improve transparency in BOE meeting and more timing feedback from community in decision-making process. Promote more public discussion about the real issues at BOE meeting. Open more channels to connect BOE and local community so everybody in our community can follow BOE meeting and provide feedback directly and in time.
-Berkeley Heights should have the number one school in Union County with the money we spend. While Berkeley Heights Schools are doing well, other neighboring school districts are spending less and are more successful. It is time for us to put more thought into exactly how we can spend tax dollars more effectively and efficiently.
I believe out of all of the Candidates, my qualifications stand out.
-PhD in Economics - Penn St.
-Founded and ran a successful non-profit school right here in Berkeley Heights
-Works for the Federal Reserve
-Two children in the Berkeley Heights school system
-Township Volunteer - BH Rescue Squad, Governor Livingston Marching Band
This year you can vote for three new Board of Education members. I ask you to include me as one of your choices on Nov 5th, 2019.
