My name is Robert Cianciulli and I am running for re-election for the Berkeley Heights Board of Education this Election Day, Tuesday, November 3rd. Previously, I served on the School Board from 2017-2019. My School Board voting record shows my deep commitment to students and taxpayers, as well as being an independent voice on the Board, even in challenging situations.

In 2018, our students were awarded additional student aid from Trenton. The Administration stated publicly at a Board Meeting that she had wanted that aid to be used to speed up the completion date of a building project at one of our elementary schools. She knew that this project would be much less expensive for taxpayers if this money were used to finish it sooner and that it would also benefit our kids. Hours prior to that budget vote, each Board member was contacted at work by our School Board president and asked to vote to use $80,000 of that student aid not for students, but instead to give just $3 to each household in town. .

That night, it was tough to watch every other School Board member vote as they had been told that afternoon. I spoke up, but it was no use. I was the only Board member who voted to allow our schools to have the full use of their student aid. As I left that meeting I remembered some advice that a District Administrator had given to me when I first joined the Board that made this a little easier to accept. She told me simply to live each day so that when I lay my head down on the pillow that night, I can look back and know that I did the right thing. I am proud to say that on each day of my time on the School Board I have lived those words.
