Yesterday, our Berkeley Heights Democratic elected officials, Mayor Devanney and Councilmen Medeiros and Yellin, congratulated their Republican colleagues on their victory in November, pledged to work together with them in putting our community first, and took part in a peaceful Reorganization meeting of the Township Council.
That is how a transition of power in a democracy should take place - with respect for the decision voters made, with appreciation of the need to come together and set aside partisan politics.
What we have seen unfold in Washington today is the exact opposite, and the Berkeley Heights Democratic Committee joins with the great majority of our residents in expressing our outrage at today's shocking and disgraceful behavior.
President Trump's behavior was rejected by a wide majority of Berkeley Heights residents last November, including by many Republicans, and his incitement of today's riot reinforces the fact that January 20th can't come soon enough.
Angie, Alvaro, Stephen, and our Democratic Committee members will continue to work with friends and neighbors across our community in combatting fear, falsehoods, and hatred in our politics, promoting cooperation and goodwill whenever possible.
George Devanney
Chairman, Berkeley Heights Democratic Committee"
