Boy Scouts of America, Patriots’ Path Council will be honoring local citizens at the 14th Annual Berkeley Heights Good Scout Award Dinner to be held on the evening of Thursday, October 3, 2019 at The Primavera Regency in Stirling. This year’s honorees are Margaret Illis, Michael Koubek, Sal Passalacqua, Angela Penna, and Elisa & Eric Probst.
The event recognizes these six outstanding citizens for their community service, as evidenced by their leadership and interests within the Berkeley Heights community, and for their embodiment of the values of the century old Scout Oath and Law in their personal and professional lives. The event co-chairs are Louisa Grossman and Pam Yoss, past Berkeley Heights Good Scout Award recipients and active volunteers in the Berkeley Heights community. The evening will include a “Wine Pull” during the reception beginning at 6:30pm to raise funds for Scouts in underserved areas of New Jersey.
Margaret Ilis is co-chair for Relay for Life of Berkeley Heights, New Providence, Mountainside, and Summit and has volunteered in the Girl Scouts of America and Boy Scouts of America programs in Berkeley Heights. Michael Koubek is Committee Chairman of Scouts BSA Troop 68 of Berkeley Heights, an active parishioner of Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church in New Providence, and is a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 783, which covers Summit, New Providence and Berkeley Heights. Sal Passalacqua is the Chef-Owner of Dimaio’s Restaurant and has served as Executive Chef for both Emeril Green on PlanetGreen and the Emeril Lagasse Show on ION TV. In additions to the shows, Sal joined Chef Emeril for his on-air productions on the Home Shopping Network, QVC network, and the Canada Home Shopping Network.
Angela Penna is the President of the Berkeley Heights PTO and has served as a trustee on the Berkeley Heights Education Foundation. She has also worked as a Communication Liaison for the Berkeley Heights Youth Soccer Club and was an active member of the Girl Scouts Troop # 40922. Elisa & Eric Probst have volunteered their time and talents to many organizations. Elisa has served the Berkeley Heights Girl Scouts, served the District PTO in a variety of roles, including President at three of the Schools and chair of multiple of committees through the years. Eric served the Cub Scouts as a leader, PAL Soccer Coach, BH Youth Soccer Club as a coach and Board member, Berkeley Swim Club Board President, and Republican Municipal Committee Member, District 3.
Berkeley Heights has a very active Scouting program for over 170 youth in three Cub Scout packs (for boys and girls ages 7 to 11 years) and two Boy Scout troops (for boys ages 11-18), sponsored by the Rotary Club of Berkeley Heights. Berkeley Heights is a part of the Watchung Mountain District of the Patriots’ Path Council, Boy Scouts of America. In this district, some 3,000 youth are served by over 70 Scouting units in communities like ours throughout Union, Morris and Somerset Counties.
