Winter Skin
Dear Susan: During the winter, the skin on my hands and feet gets so dry, it actually cracks and becomes painful. What’s the best defense for “winter skin?”

SkinDeep’s Remedy: Footlogics Cracked Heel Formula and Babors Hand Cream.

How well your hands can withstand the winter has a lot to do with the strength of our skin. Skin is made up of a natural barrier comprised of proteins, lipids and oils, all which protects our skin. Washing our hands and the cold temperatures will break down our skins natural defense. To protect our skin, wear gloves outside and MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE your hands and feet. The key is to start moisturizing your hands before they get dry. Leave a hand and foot cream on your nightstand and put it on every night before you go to bed. Take the time to really work in the foot cream to your feet, giving extra care on your heels. For best results, use a foam moisturizer for your feet because it penetrates the tough foot skin best and still allows the feet to breathe.

Static Cling

Dear Susan: I commute to Manhattan every day and by the time I get to my office, the static cling is out of control—my hair is practically standing straight up! Not the best look for my 9am meeting. Help!

SkinDeep's Remedy: Moroccan Oil Frizz Control Spray

Static cling can be so annoying! Try keeping a couple of dryer sheets in your purse or coat pocket, then wipe them on your hair to combat the cling. You can even wrap your brushes and combs in them as well. Use rubber- or natural-bristle brushes, which helps too. Try working a little moisturizing cream into your hands and then run your hands thru your hair--but use sparingly so you don't get greasy hair. Always use hair conditioner (silicone-based is best).  Believe it or not, don't wear rubber-sole shoes because this will create an electrical charge and contribute to static in the hair.

Dry Lips
Dear Susan: I don’t like to wear lipstick but in the winter, my lips get very dry. What can I do to prevent unsightly cracked, dry lips?
SkinDeep’s Remedy: Babor Clear Lip Balm

Lips don't contain oil glands like our skin, does so they tend to become very dry much more easily. First, try not to lick your lips because our saliva contains digestive enzymes that can actually make them drier and the skin on the lips even thinner. Drink plenty of water because dry lips are also a sign of dehydration. You can also try fluoride-free toothpaste and apply a little of your face moisturizer on your lips as well. A trick I like to use everyday is applying a dab of my eye cream to my lips as well—just whatever is leftover after applying it to my eyes.

The Art of Demonstrating Interest

If you’ve perused any forums on college admissions (looking at you, Mom and Dad!) then you’ve already come across the term “Demonstrated Interest.”  It sounds like some sort of corporate terminology, doesn’t it?  That’s because that’s exactly what it is.  I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: colleges are businesses.  ...
