What's the Makeup Trends for this years

Sign Up for E-News

Dear Susan: I’m looking forward upcoming holiday parties and having an excuse to get fancy! What’s this year’s makeup trend that I could apply to my next holiday gathering?

It’s always fun to get dressed up. This year autumn/winter features a softer take on the smoked-out eye...Taupes, greys, and a touch of cream shimmer haze together to form a sultry-but-subtle eye look.

“The flat wave” is this season's most in-demand hairstyle. Use your straighteners to add a smooth bend to the hair and finish with a misting of shine spray.

Not sure you want to try this at home? SKIN DEEP to the rescue! For your festive look, come see us for you Holiday makeup and hair.

How to de-stress for the holidays

Dear Susan: I am a mom of 4 great kids and have a large extended family. I feel so blessed but the holidays always tend to stress me out b/c there’s so much to do “behind the scenes”. Any suggestions on how to keep my balance this year?

The holiday season can be overwhelming for us as adults who are responsible for the planning, baking, and buying. If just thinking about the coming holiday season makes your anxious, why not try a new plan this year? Here are some ways to feel less frazzled and enjoy the holidays more.

Plan ahead: why not write out your holiday cards in November instead of waiting till December? Bake your pies early and freeze them. Don't wait till the last minute to do your shopping for a holiday gifts. A little planning goes a long way to keeping cool during the holidays.

Also, it seems obvious but worth repeating, take time to have fun! Don’t’ forget to enjoy yourself, like taking time for a lunch with a friend that you haven't seen in a while.

And most importantly take time for yourself! Studies have shown that a massage is an effective treatment for reducing stress, pain and muscle tension. Facials are also beneficial for hydrating smoothing out your skin and making it clean and reduce stress as well, because there's often a wonderful massage included with it.

Teen Acne

Dear Susan: My son is a full-blown teenager now, with full-blown acne. He washes his face when he remembers but it doesn’t seem to help much. He’s upset that his class pictures are coming up—what advice can you give us to help alleviate the appearance of acne?

There are many benefits of facials, but for teens in particular, facials will help clean out blackheads and clogged pores caused by your skins natural oil production. Facials also help kill the bacteria in the skin and reduce the redness.

Excessive oily skin sometimes has over-active sebaceous glands, so cleaning out the pores helps. We recommend that this is done by a licensed esthetician because they are practiced in this service, which if done incorrectly, can cause scaring.

Salicylic acid helps to correct the abnormal shedding of cells. For milder acne, salicylic acid helps unclog pores. They also reduce inflammation. Retinal products can unclog pores, allowing other medicated creams and gels to work better. They also reduce acne outbreaks by preventing dead cells from clogging pores. By clearing acne and reducing outbreaks, they may also reduce the formation of acne scars.

So I recommend facials or glycolic peels ever other week, along with proper home care. Products from a profession spa will be more effective and of better quality than the drug store. And using the right products are key.

For extreme cases and if facials and the home care do not work then there are medications that a dermatologist can give you so a trip to the dermatologist would be the next step.

The key to treating acne is to be patient--it does take time and the proper home care takes time. To get the best results, you'll have to commit to a series of acne facials. Typically, facials are scheduled every week to every other week. To keep the benefits going, you'll need to be consistent with your acne treatment and skin care routine during your "off days."

I’m proud to support Colleen Mahr for Chair of the Union County Democratic Committee  (UCDC) and am encouraging my Scotch Plains peers to join me.

I was a first time candidate wanting to make a difference in my hometown of Scotch Plains, when Mayor Mahr of neighboring Fanwood stepped in to help me campaign and win my election to be Councilwoman three years ago.

Democratic Party Would Be Making a Big Mistake by Not Recognizing Colleen Mahr's Talents

Invest Like a Tortoise -- Not Like a Hare

Aesop’s “The Tortoise and the Hare” is a perfect metaphor for the way people go about investing their money. As you recall in the fable, the hare brags about his ability to beat the tortoise and is overly confident about winning. In the investment world, the hare is someone who thinks he or she is great at selecting “winners” and avoiding “losers.” The ...
