Dear Susan,

Why do I notice more hair loss in the fall? How do I care for my scalp?

Finding hair in your brush is completely normal as we shed hair daily. However, excessive hair loss may call for more attention. Hair loss can start as young as thirteen years old and is seen more in men due to having more hormones and releasing more toxins than women.

Hair loss happens most often in the summer and fall seasons.

During the summer, the scalp has more exposure to sunlight which causes the body to produce less melatonin. This affects the hormone levels in the scalp and signals hair follicles to carry out their natural shedding phase for longer periods of time during the summer.

In the fall, testosterone levels are higher, which contributes to hair loss. It exists in both men and women and is known to trigger summer hair loss, but it may not fully occur until the fall months.

A common condition that results in hair loss is Hyperseborrhea.

This is when the scalp produces an excessive amount of sebum. You know those jokes about bald men buffing their scalp to get it so shiny? That shininess is actually a toxic secretion that comes through the pore that coats the scalp and smothers the hair from growing in as thick.

In normal quantities, sebum is an oily substance that protects the skin from dehydration and has antibacterial properties. When there is excess sebum, the equilibrium of the hydrolipid (a film protects the skin) is completely thrown off. This can cause itchy, painful scalps, and eventually leads to hair loss.

Although you may not realize it, the use of everyday products, like hairspray and gel, builds up on the scalp and smothers the hair shaft. When the shaft cant breathe, the hair will start growing thinner since it can’t fully come through the follicle. Only shampooing the hair is not enough to thoroughly clean out the hair shaft—Exfoliating at least once a month is necessary in preventing hair loss. We exfoliate the skin on our face weekly...well the scalp is skin, too!

Monthly Treatments

Skin Deep Salon and Spa offers a Signature Exfoliating Scalp Treatment where the scalp is thoroughly exfoliated resulting in shinier, fuller, cleaner, and healthier hair. The Signature Exfoliating Scalp Treatment includes a lovely massage, exfoliates the scalp, as well as hydrates the hair shaft. Our Peeling Scalp Treatment is a fruit acid peel that removes dead white skin cells, hydrates the scalp, and clears the playing field. This treatment is not as pampering and solely concentrates on the scalp. These services should be booked on a monthly basis!

Home Care

Skin Deep has recently introduced Oribe’s Serene Scalp line which is to be used at home. Here is an excerpt from Oribe’s website on the scalp exfoliator: “Reveal the secret to a healthy scalp. This powerful scrub gently polishes scalp with exfoliating beads to remove oil, dirt and product buildup while a blend of alpha hydroxy acids and fruit extracts cleanses pores and nourishes hair. Scalp is left primed and deeply purified.” This product can also be purchased at Skin Deep Salon and Spa for home treatments as well.

For the month of October, purchase the Oribe Serene Scalp Exfoliating Scrub or Thickening Spray and receive a complimentary scalp treatment service. Must be pre-booked.
