Neck pain, headaches, back pain, numbness, migraines, and shoulder pain have all been related to a poor, weak posture called Tech Neck and can be both corrected and prevented with lifestyle changes and corrective exercises. Before we go to the video on posture exercises to learn how to fix the problem, let’s take a moment to understand the cosmetic, physical and emotional impact of Tech Neck.

Tech Neck begins as a cosmetic issue - the upper back and shoulders become rounded and the head passes forward of the shoulders leading to a weak and “slumped” posture. This increases pressure on the neck and shoulders creating chronic muscle tightness, muscle knots and nerve pressure that can radiate numbness into the arms and hands. It is also a common cause of shoulder tendinitis.

Emotionally, consider how you stand and walk when you are having a “bad” day. Your head and eyes are down, your shoulders are rounded forward and you are slumped. Now think about your posture when you are on your game. Tall, strong, head up, eyes forward, chest expanded. Tech Neck puts your body in a position that emotionally tells it you are having a “bad” day! According to a study in the March 2017 Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry fixing Tech Neck will help your mood and reduce depression.

Finally, according to the Harvard Health Newsletter, a poor and weak posture can be linked to breathing difficulties, heartburn and constipation. The bottom line: A straight spine and strong posture are the pathway to getting and staying healthy.

The encouraging news is Tech Neck can be safely and effectively treated with Chiropractic Rehabilitation. There are four pillars to the treatment

  1. Postural Awareness- teaching you how to find neutral spine
  2. Chiropractic Adjustments to restore mobility and alignment to the spine
  3. Corrective Exercise to stretch tight muscles and strengthen weak muscles
  4. Myofascial release of tight muscles and tendons

Braces for Tech Neck are also useful, and we do recommend them in the appropriate cases. That will require a call to the office, we would be happy to help you decide if a brace is necessary.
