Auditions announced for HAIRSPRAY at Villagers Theatre

AUDITION DATES: Sunday, February 18, 2017 - 7-10pm Monday, February 19, 2017 - 7-10pm 

Auditions will be held by appointment and those interested should click the link to schedule a time slot:

Walk-ins will be seen as time permits. 

Please bring your out-dates to the audition with you. A rehearsal schedule will be provided. 

***With the exception of Little Inez, all those auditioning MUST be at least 16 years old.

Callbacks, by invitation only, will take place on Sunday, February 25, 2017 beginning at noon. 

Please prepare 32 bars of an uptempo pop/rock/r&b song from the 1950s/60s and bring sheet music in the correct key. An accompanist will be provided. Please do not sing from the show. Bring a headshot and resume. Please be dressed comfortably as all will be taught a brief dance combination following their vocal audition. 

Rehearsals will begin in mid-March. A rehearsal calendar will be available at auditions so that all potential conflicts may be noted. 

Tech: June 1-7, 2018 

Please note -This production will rehearse the weekend of Memorial Day and the full company will be called. Those auditioning should have open availability. 

June 8-24, 2018 
(Friday and Saturday Sat at 8pm, Sunday at 2pm) 
*No performance on June 22. 


Tracy Turnblad: 16-20's to play high school; mezzo, belt. Ideally 5'5" or shorter. A heavyset teen with aspirations to change the world. Strong actress with a natural genuine likability. Outgoing, unstoppable, goodhearted with a vibrant, lovable, spirited personality. Loves to dance. 

Edna Turnblad: 40-50; second tenor/baritone, male to play female. Large physique preferred. Sincere and honest, NOT camp drag. Tracy's kind, plus-sized mother. Edna runs a laundry business out of her home. A working class, devoted, loving housewife with dreams of her own. 

Corny Collins: 30-40; tenor. Host of the local TV teen dance show. Handsome, charming, engaging, smooth. 

Amber Von Tussle: 16-20's to play high school; mezzo, belt. Bratty, selfish resident princess of The Corny Collins Show who always gets her way. She is willing to do anything to win the Miss Teenage Hairspray pageant. 

Velma Von Tussle: 40-50; mezzo, belt. A former beauty queen, Amber's mother, and producer of the local TV teen dance show. Upscale, attractive, prejudiced snob who always wants her daughter in the spotlight. Funny, biting, manipulative. 

Link Larkin: 16-20's to play high school; second tenor/baritone. A teenage heartthrob and one of The Corny Collins Show Council Members who falls in love with Tracy. Handsome, clean-cut, goodhearted and down to-earth. 

Penny Pingleton: 16-20's to play high school; mezzo, belt. Tracy's slightly dorky, devoted, neurotic and perky best friend. 

Seaweed J. Stubbs: 16-20's to play high school; tenor. A hip dancer. His dance lessons help Tracy get chosen for the local TV teen dance show. Cool, attractive, street smart, goodhearted. Son of Motormouth Maybelle who becomes Penny's boyfriend. African American. 

Motormouth Maybelle: 40-50; female alto with high belt or male counter tenor. The owner of a downtown record shop and a host on The Corny Collins Show; self-described as "big, blonde and beautiful." Seaweed and Little Inez's mother. Powerful and inspiring, with an infectious, brassy personality. African American. 

Wilbur Turnblad: 40-55; baritone. Tracy's goofy father; owns the Har-De-Har Hut joke shop and is still madly in love with his wife, Edna. He encourages Tracy to follow her dreams. A working class inventor with a sweet, childlike personality. Adores his family. This role could potentially double with other smaller roles. 

Little Inez: 10-15; high mezzo belt. Seaweed's younger sister, who tries to audition for The Corny Collins Show but is turned away because she is black. Spunky, tough, streetwise, outgoing, older than her years. African American. 

Prudy Pingleton: 40-55; mezzo (minimal-singing role). Penny Pingleton's uptight, overprotective and small-minded mother. This role will double with various zany characters. Must be a sharp, funny and inventive actress. 

Mr. Pinky: 40-60; baritone. A flamboyant fashion boutique owner. This role could potentially double with other small roles. 

The Dynamites: 18-20's; three sassy singer/dancers, inspired by the Supremes. Will double as Lorraine, Cindy and Pearl - students at Patterson Park High that frequent Motormouth Maybelle's record shop. African American. 

The Corny Collins Council: 16-20's; strong dancers. IQ, Shelley, Brenda, Sketch, Fender, Tammy, Lou Ann and 

Other Students: 16-20's; strong dancers. Duane, Gilbert, Thad - kids we find in detention, and most in Motormouth Maybelle's record shop. African American.
