Louis Bamberger, NJ Philanthropist & Department Store Owner
The Eitz Chayim Adult Education Committee of Temple Sholom will host a presentation entitled “Louis Bamberger” on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at 7 pm. Admission is free and open to the public.
Biographer Linda Forgosh will discuss Bamberger’s upbringing as the child of German Jewish immigrants who rose to fame as the founder of L. Bamberger & Co. department store in Newark, N.J., which grew to be the sixth largest department store in the country during its glory years. Bamberger was also a philanthropist whose generosity helped bring to life the Newark YM-YWHA, Beth Israel Hospital, and the Newark Museum.
Forgosh is an independent scholar, Executive Director of the Jewish Historical Society of New Jersey, and the recipient of the prestigious Charles F. Cummings Award presented to her by the Newark Preservation and Landmarks Committee for her efforts to research, write, and preserve the history of Newark.
