NJ Intergenerational Orchestra Free Concert

PLAINFIELD, NJ -- The New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra will take inspiration and return it to the audience with its first concert of the new season on Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Crescent Avenue Presbyterian Church in Plainfield. The performance will begin at 3:00 p.m., and will feature performances from all three of NJIO’s orchestral ensembles, as well as its Flute Choir.  Admission is free; donations are gratefully accepted at the door.

Conducted by Artistic Director Warren Cohen, NJIO’s Symphony Orchestra will perform the incredible Cello Concerto by Samuel Barber, with Bethany Bobbs as the soloist. While not as commonplace in the repertoire as other Barber works, like his Adagio for Strings or his Violin Concerto, the Cello Concerto stands out as a physically demanding but immensely rewarding piece to both perform and experience. The piece won Barber the New York Music Critics Circle Award in 1947 but has been performed only a handful of times since due to its technical intricacies.

NJIO’s Symphony will also perform Robert Schumann’s marvelous Symphony No. 4, as well as Amilcare Ponchielli’s La Gioconda, or The Dance of the Hours, a piece made famous by its appearance in Disney’s Fantasia. The latter will be performed with guest conductor Lloyd Peterson, who won the right to conduct Symphony as a prize at our 25th Anniversary gala.  Intermezzo Orchestra will be performing Franz Schubert’s March Militaire along with selections from Ludwig van Beethoven’s German Dances.

The concert will begin with NJIO’S Prelude Ensemble’s performance, under the direction of Beth Maliszewski, and NJIO’s Flute Choir’s will perform at intermission.
