Henry E. Buttelmann, of Berkeley Heights, N.J., passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at the age of 85.

Henry was born and grew up in Jersey City, N.J. He was the son of Ellen (nee Eckman) and Henry G. Buttelmann. He was a longtime resident of Berkeley Heights, N.J. and attended Stevens Institute of Technology where he obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Applied Mechanics.

Henry had a distinguished career as a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer that spanned over 44 years. In 1955 he became employed with Gibbs & Cox, Inc., a naval architect firm in New York City retiring in 1999 as the President and Chief Executive Officer, he remained on the Board of Directors at Gibbs & Cox, Inc. and Marotta Scientific Controls Inc., until 2002. Henry was a member of the American Society of Naval Architects, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers as well as many other technical societies. He previously served on the American Bureau of Shipping Engineering Committee and the Technical Committee, the ASME Gas Turbine Institute Codes and Standards Committee and the Marine Technical Committee as well as numerous other committees. Henry was an avid reader and enjoyed woodworking and gardening. But, most of all he loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Henry is survived by his beloved wife Mary Ann (nee Gallagher) Buttelmann, who he married on September 23, 1961, their loving children: Henry Buttelmann (Margery), Barbara Luciani, and Janet Beagelman (Steven) and his cherished grandchildren: Samantha LaGanga, Brian Luciani (Fiancée Elizabeth Grisafi), Jameson Luciani, Morgan Luciani, Samantha Beagelman, Michael Buttelmann, Tara Beagelman and Matthew Buttelmann.
