Joe was born in Dover, NJ to the late Elizabeth Giles (nee Dawe) and Charles Joseph Saturnia. His family moved to Metuchen, NJ. Joe was a 1951 graduate of Metuchen High School, where he played trumpet in the band and earned a varsity letter in cross country.

Joe enrolled in Seton Hall University, and after a year had enlisted in the US Marine Corps as the Korean War began. He was assigned as an aviation technician and was proud of his service as a Marine. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant.

Upon his discharge Joe moved to Glen Ellyn, IL where his parents had relocated.  He  began a career in the banking industry in Chicago, a decision that changed his life, as it was there that he met the love of his life, Ruth Patch, on a blind date set up by her brothers.  Joe and Ruth were married in Glen Ellyn, IL on February 15, 1958.

Joe’s professional life led him to work with the Jim Walter Corporation in Tampa, FL. In 1976 he was recruited and hired by the American Express Co. in New York City, where he spent the rest of his career.  Joe was the Vice President of Treasury Operations in the Corporate Treasurer’s Office. One of the joys of his work was leading the young executive internship program for American Express, as he loved seeing the young people succeed.  Joe retired from American Express in 1993.

Among the things that Joe was passionate about were the University of Notre Dame and Frank Sinatra, who was always playing on the stereo or in the car. He unabashedly instilled in his children and grandchildren the love of Notre Dame football.

Joe’s greatest love was for his family.  He was always happiest when he was surrounded by family. Joe was an incredible husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.  He is lovingly remembered for his unconditional love and kindness, his thoughtfulness and wisdom, his embodied graciousness.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Ruth Saturnia (nee Patch) of Berkeley Heights, NJ; His loving children, Pamela Saturnia of Muscatine, IA, Joseph Saturnia, Jr. and his wife Grace of Honolulu, HI, Kim Ridgway and her husband Jeff of Wharton, NJ and Kurt Saturnia and his wife Krista of Berkeley Heights, NJ; his cherished grandchildren, Devon, Titus, Silas, Owen, Isaiah, Ian, Avery, and Ryan; and his dear brother Wayne Saturnia and his wife Donna of Winder, GA. Joe was also survived by many loving relatives and friends.
