WARREN, NJ - On Sunday, Feb 3rd, in collaboration with Berkeley Heights, New Providence and neighborhood Chinese Communities, Berkeley Heights Huaxia Chinese School (BHHXCS) hosted the third annual Chinese New Year Celebration, to celebrate the beginning of the Lunar Year of the Golden Pig.  Berkeley Heights Mayor Angie Devanney, Town Council members Jeanne Kingsley, Manuel Couto, Alvaro Medeiros, Stephen Yellin, Susan Poage, Board of Education members Doug Reinstein, Chris Reilly, Robert Cianciulli, and Berkeley Heights Diversity Council Executive board member Damian Facey, and school legal counsel Liwu Hong attended and spoke at the event.

The celebration was held at Watchung Hills Performing Arts Center this year with over 600 attendants coming from Berkeley Heights and surrounding towns. The first part of the celebration was family and culture fair where kids participated in many traditional Chinese games, craft and activities, including Chinese calligraphy, YoYo, Go game, lamp riddles, family portraits, dragon parade...etc. The second half was spectacular New Year performance inside the auditorium. The two and half hours performance include lion dance, Kung Fu, Tai chi, Chinese songs and dances, stand-up comedy, kids talent shows, Chinese traditional flute, and spectacular performances from local community groups.

On behalf of the local Chinese Communities, Sam Xu, the Principal of BHHXCS thanked everyone for coming together to celebrate the culture and the traditions. He wished everyone a prosperous and healthy Year of the Golden Pig.

Mayor Angie Devanney said, "I had the opportunity to visit the Berkeley Height Huaxia school about five months ago, and I was overwhelmed and impressed by the principal, staff and the families, and the activities that were going on that day. I hope I can come back and visit soon. This is a wonderful opportunity for Berkeley Heights and the surrounding communities to come together to celebrate Chinese culture. With that, I would like to wish all a happy new year, Xin Nian Kuai Le (Happy New Year in Mandarin Chinese)!" Town Council member Jeanne Kingsley mentioned her son started taking Mandarin last year and loved it. She looks forward to more opportunity with this program to expand in Berkeley Heights and surrounding towns. Doug Reinstein, president of Board of Education and Mr. Damian Facey of Berkeley Heights Diversity Council also spoke on behalf of the board of education and diversity council respectively to wish everyone a happy new year.

Berkeley Heights Huaxia Chinese School (BHHXCS) was found in 2016 and is located in Berkeley Heights, NJ. BHHXCS is a community oriented, non-religious, non-political cultural educational institute that provides classroom instruction on Chinese language and culture, and provides a common social venue for the school community. BHHXCS is an independent organization and is not affiliated with any other institutions. BHHXCS strives to succeed in teaching Chinese and promoting Chinese culture by engaging every student's curiosity with its unique education approach.

With the continuing help and support from members of Berkeley Heights Board of Education and staff of Columbia Middle School, BHHXCS started the third school year smoothly in September 2018, with over 170 registered students mostly coming from Berkeley Heights. BHHXCS currently offers 31 language and culture courses including K-9 and AP Chinese classes, Chinese as Second Language (CSL), and many culture classes such as Kung Fu & Tai Chi, Calligraphy, folk dance, etc... The school continues to work hard to be the partner with local school districts in Chinese language and culture education.
