BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ -- Republican Councilman Manual Couto won a second term on council and will be joined there by his running-mate, Gentiana Brahimaj. They defeated Democrats Julia Figler and Rina Franchino.
According to the unofficial results provided by the Township Clerk, Brahimaj was the top vote-getter in the council race, with 1,825 votes. Couto received 1,810 votes. Figlar received 1,375 votes and Franchino 1,310.
The Union County website reported the mail in ballots and even though Democrats received more mail in votes than the Republicans, it wasn't enough to destroy the GOP's lead. Figlar received 293, Franchino 286, Brahimaj 232, and Couto 230 mail in votes.
That brings the unofficial total to: Brahimaj 2,057; Couto 2,040; Figlar 1,668, and Franchino 1,596 votes.
There were two public questions on the ballot. Berkeley Heights voters approved both by a substantial margin.
