BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ – The first combination Barbecue Fundraiser for American Legion Post 356, Sons of the American Legion and VFW Post 6259 was a success.
Held on Sunday, May 26, at VFW Post 6259, the western-themed event, with its own cactus prop, featured great food, cooked on site by members of the American Legion, a visit by some big trucks, at least one of which was raised, games for children and adults and beverages...some of which were adult. The event was also held to attract new members to each organization.
The groups decided to share the post about four months ago and are sharing the former VFW Post 6259 building at 15 Locust Avenue and supporting each other. Many of the VFW members are also members of the American Legion.
The fund-raising barbecue was to help raise money for renovations to the building and property, as well as to purchase new signs and flags for the site.
The American Legion is for everyone, male or female, who has served in the military. The Sons of the American Legion membership is open to men who had a father or grandfather who was in the military or was a member of the American Legion. The American Legion also has a women's auxiliary, for those who want to support the group.
The American Legion and Sons of the American Legion meet the last Monday of the Month at the post. Call Stephen M. Stets, the post commander, at 201-370-0815 for information on joining.
The VFW, which stands for “Veterans of Foreign Wars” is open to anyone who has served in the military in a combat zone. The VFW meets at 7:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month. To find out how to join VFW Post 6259, contact Tom Lombardi, commander, at 908-508-0999.
