BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Local Berkeley Heights Junior Troop 40553 recently earned their Girl Scout Bronze Award by promoting literacy development among young children.

This fall, the girls hosted a book drive at three elementary schools for the Bridge of Books Foundation in Holmdel, NJ. They collected and sorted over 1,000 books which were distributed to underserved young children in New Jersey. Next, they worked on a project with Susan Poage, a long-time teacher at Mary Kay McMillin Early Childhood Center.

Poage joined the girls at their monthly meetings and guided them with researching and creating emergent reader books, flash cards and audio books for her to use in her first-grade classroom. As one scout said, “You forget what it was like to learn to read and this project helped remind us of this important skill.”
