BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - At Monday's Council Meeting, Township Administrator Liza Viana reported  that New Jersey American Water is in the process of replacing many aging valves on their pipes in Berkeley Heights.

"Unfortunately, this often means they have to dig up a portion of the road under which they are doing work," she said. "The Township is working to increase communication and coordinate with NJAW to know what roads they will be working on - and when - to avoid newly milled and paved roads from being dug up."

The Township will inform residents when work is expected on their streets in the coming weeks, but all NJAW customers also can opt in to receive notifications via email, text, or phone, from NJAW directly the day work is scheduled to start on their street. Residents should check their  NJAW account settings on the NJAW website to be sure they are receiving such alerts.

The following roads are scheduled to have valve replacement work done in the next six weeks or so:

  • Berkeley Avenue (at Park Ave)
  • Bolton Boulevard (at Park Ave)
  • Brook Street (at Park Ave)
  • Diamond Hill Road (at Twin Falls Road)
  • 262 Park Avenue (at Riverbend Road)
  • 481 Park Avenue (at Fairfax Drive)
  • Chaucer (at Park Ave)
  • Cromwell Court (at Park Ave)

"The Township has sent our current paving schedule to NJAW so that the water company avoids putting any of those roads on their schedule in the upcoming years," Viana said.  NJAW will issue their planned schedule for 2020 in March/April of next year, during this time the Township will again coordinate their paving schedule. NJAW and other utilities are required to repave any streets they disturb to complete their work; this paving will be overseen by the Township for quality assurance.
