BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Sounds of a jack hammer heralded the beginning of the Plainfield Avenue Resurfacing Project last night. The noise was loud enough that one resident at the Township Council asked for a speaker to use the microphone because all she could hear were the jack-hammers.
Plainfield Avenue from Springfield Avenue to Valley Road in Berkeley Heights will be closed due to construction at night, from 7 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. for eight nights in two stages, weather permitting.
Stage 1: Plainfield Avenue from Springfield Ave to Mountain Ave
Stage 2: Plainfield Ave from Mountain Ave to Valley Road.
The work being performed will include milling, paving, and striping of the road. Due to the nature of the work involved, the amount of men and machinery required, full road closure will be necessary in the area of work to optimize the safety of the work crews and motoring public alike. A clearly marked detour route has been established and maintained by the contractor. Emergency vehicles will be allowed through the work zone. Access to residences, including deliveries and other services, in the work zone will be allowed as much as possible.
The County recognizes the inconvenience that any road construction may cause and apologizes for any difficulties encountered. The County shall make every effort to have the work completed as soon as possible.
Those with traffic questions should call the Union County Bureau of Traffic Safety & Maintenance at (908) 789-6011 during normal business hours. If any emergencies arise, contact the Berkeley Heights Police Department.
Regular updates for the various phases of construction and their impact on traffic will be posted on the Union County Bureau of Traffic Safety & Maintenance website if and when they become available.
