Sustainable Jersey, a non-profit entity that provides support to green teams and environmental commissions across New Jersey, has selected the Berkeley Heights Environmental Commission's (BHEC's) video of the August 24, 2019 litter clean-up of Locust Avenue as one of seven state-wide finalists in a video competition among all other New Jersey green teams and environmental commissions. The top three winning teams in the competition will win a cash prizes - $1,000 for the first place team and $500 for the second place and third place teams.
The clean-up was one of the many clean-ups the BHEC has conducted in partnership with Val's Valiants, the Berkeley Heights Downtown Beautification Committee (DBC), and Sustainable Berkeley Heights. This particular clean-up was significant insofar as it marked the third clean-up that Girl Scouts Troop 40822 attended to support of two of its members, Pavni Bhardwaj and Katherine Zhou, in completing their Silver Project. Bardwaj and Zhou are both featured in the video, explaining that "[they] are very passionate about the environment" and that is why they want to do something impactful for their community.
"We chose litter to be the main focus of our Silver Project, " Zhou explained. "We realized that we can't change the world in one day, so you have to start small."
The video showcases the raw spirit of Berkeley Heights, with kids and adults coming together and lending a hand to make the Berkeley Heights community beautiful. It also features members of the BHEC and Township Council, as well as other residents who came out to put on some gloves, grab a bag, and put the litter on Locust in its proper place.
Voting for the top three videos ends at midnight on October 24, 2019.
