BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Due to the current COVID 19 circumstances and its numerous state and local mandated regulations, the Berkeley Heights Recreation Commission, Recreation Department and Township Administration, together, have decided not to run Summer Playground Camp 2020.

"We are taking a totally different approach this summer," said Ed Gallitelli, Recreation Commission Chairman. "In an effort to provide a structured program that will allow your children to socialize, recreate and have fun in a supervised setting, we are offering a 'Summer Experience' classes. "

Registration is through Community Pass and will be open to BH Residents ONLY, beginning on June 30th at 9:30 a.m. There will be no more than 20 registrants permitted in each class in accordance with state mandated regulations.

"We will be wait-listing all classes when registration opens, in order to get a head count of the number of registrants. If the numbers are large enough we will open the class and register everyone who joined, on a first come, first served basis. If we have an overflowing WL in one age group for any class, we will open another class alongside the existing class in the same time slot - with a six-foot social distance. However, children from one class are not permitted to co-mingle with children in the other class," said Gallitelli.

The camp will follow the following safety measurements:

  • A certified health aide will be on site during all sessions.
  • Temperatures will be taken of all children before each session begins.
  • No child is permitted to attend class if they are sick or experiencing any symptoms connected with COVID.
  • All mandatory paperwork will be filed with the township health official.
  • A half an hour has been allotted between sessions in order to accommodate time for sanitizing all equipment thoroughly, so as not to cross contaminate.
  • Hand sanitizer will be required and applied at the beginning and end of each class.
  • Masks are not required due to heat index but may be worn if desired.
  • Hand sanitizing stations will also be available on site.

Youth Tennis Program

This tennis program will run simultaneously with the “Summer Experience” classes. Although the location of these programs will both be held at “Lower Columbia”, the tennis classes and Summer Experience groups will never cross mingle. The tennis instructor will be sanitizing all equipment as she customarily does by spraying the balls and carts down before each session. Each child will use hand sanitizer before and after each hour long session.

Signs will be posted on the fence and around the playground regarding COVID rules and regulations. All children will be required to bring their own tennis rackets to class.

"We thank you for your patience during this time as we try our best to adhere to state, county and governmental regulations," said Gallitelli.
