BORDENTOWN, NJ - The Boys U13 Arsenal from Berkeley Heights Youth Soccer Club swept to victory in the New Jersey State Commissioner’s Cup by defeating the Titans from East Brunswick Soccer Club 2-0, at Friendship Fields in Bordentown on Saturday, Nov 4. The Commissioner’s Cup is a single elimination tournament hosted throughout the fall by New Jersey Youth Soccer for travel soccer teams from towns all over the state.
Midfielder Chris Ronga led off the game’s scoring with a high arcing strike from outside the penalty area in the first half. Striker Blake Ortiz then added an insurance goal with a well-placed penalty shot after drawing a hard foul in the area, and keeper Jonathan Schmidt made the saves when called on to earn his second clean sheet of the tournament.
To reach the finals, Arsenal had to defeat a number of highly ranked EDP teams, starting off with a 2-0 shutout of Montclair United under the lights at Snyder Field in late September. The team then traveled to the southern end of the turnpike to defeat the Vatreni Strikers of the Swedesboro-Woolrich Soccer Association by a score of 2-1, their closest match of the tourney. The semi-finals against the Bhoys of Summit were played at the neutral site of Friendship Fields, and produced a 3-1 result which propelled the team into the finals against New Brunswick.
In MNJYSA conference play, the Arsenal currently find themselves in second place with a 4-2-1 record with three games remaining in the fall season.
